the most well-known big independent technical bookstore that also
does mail order and has been around for about 20 years is OpAmp:

OpAmp Technical Books
1033 N. Sycamore Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90038
800-468-4322
http://www.opamp.com

there really isn't a "2nd place" since OpAmp owns the market,
but if there was a #3, it would be Technical Book Company:

Technical Book Company
2056 Westwood Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90025
800-233-5150

the above 2 stores are listed in the misc.books.technical FAQ:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/books/technical/

there's a smaller bookstore that's also known to have a good
technical book selection:

Scholar's Bookstore
El Segundo, CA 90245
310-322-3161

(and of course, the standbys are always the university bookstores
for UCLA, CalTech, UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, etc.)

as to be expected, someone has collated a list of bookstores
in the LA area:

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/4824/na-la.htm

hope this helps!!
