In CubaConference 2016 , more exactly on April 27th , I'll be running a development sprint in Havana . It'd be useful for us to setup a PyPI mirror [1]_ it is just something we can not afford in Cuba . I mean , I've read that the size of such a clone used to be about 120GB (i.e. 125,829,120 KB) [2]_ , whereas other sources suggest it takes about 180 GB . If my maths skills don't betray me then downloading it at 130 KBps (which is the max speed I've seen when connecting to ETECSA public WiFi hotspots) would take about 16131 hours (i.e. 672 days) and would cost $32262 USD . Besides , since it's a proxy , internet access is still needed so as to download packages when no match can be found in the cache . Mirrors built with bandsnatch will allow us to setup a full PyPI mirror with a diversity of packages suitable to organize virtually all kinds of events , looking forward into what we plan to do in the near future . -- Regards, Olemis - @olemislc Apache? I'm heading to St. Louis early May and Charlie (exec I know) as asking about Vietnam in June maybe (code school business, still somewhat speculative given curriculum still up in the air (working on it)). I joined the Brython group at least and shared an edu-sig (a frequent haunt) about the upcoming sprint. https://mail.python.org/pipermail/edu-sig/2016-April/011432.html Whatever Cuba PyEvents need but don't get this time around, is what to add to the queue for a next time or a next. Mirroring PyPi in Cuba sounds like a good long range plan, irrespective of sprints. Generic rack space in general is likely a strong need. I went to Vilnius for the PyEvent there some years ago and the local Pythonistas understood the WiFi in the very best hotel would still not be enough for the army of geeks about to descend and most their focus was on contracting for better WiFi with some other vendor. Just for fun, my pix from that visit: https://flic.kr/p/28Z6R2 <--- main Europython venue https://flic.kr/p/294wSd <-- where I stayed with Swedish sponsors The cubaconf website looks really good by the way.
