I disagree.

It is a pain, yes, but mostly it's a pain on Windows.
And for windows you just need to make an installable
.exe, and only once, and users will happily use this.
I've no doubt building Python on Windows is a pain
too, but users never have to deal with this
themselves.

Of course, there's the question if OpenSSL works on
Macintosh and other less popular platforms.
