Thanks, Ned. I tried with:

   ./configure --with-pydebug MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.9 && make

I'm still able to reproduce. I plan to find some time this weekend to dig into the source and see if I can narrow down the cause (or at least make the hang easier / quicker to reproduce).
