Summary: Digital Unix build fails to create ccpython.o

Initial Comment:
I am attempting to install Python 2.3.2 on Digital Unix
V40.E (Revision 1091). The make goes nearly all the way
through, then crashes:

Can't open Modules/ccpython.o (No such file or
directory)

The same thing happens with Python 2.3.1 and 2.1.3.

The configure command I used was

./configure --with-cxx=/usr/bin/cc --without-gcc

(I know what you're thinking: try it with gcc. Well, I
tried building gcc, and it gave me even more problems
than Python.)

The Makefile is attached.

Thank you for any enlightenment you can provide.

Did you try either of these:
  ./configure --without-gcc
  ./configure --without-cxx --without-gcc

?
