Actually, when I reversed my version recently from a CVS, it seems I
installed the LinuxPPC 1.5.1 version rather than 1.5.2. Eep.

And yes, it was modified in 1.5.2 which explains why it suddenly stopped
working (I went back a version).

I'm writing an APOP server (technically, a POP3 server that only does APOP
authentication) that I'd be happy to contribute if you're interested.

Ah, OK. I was looking for an official way of doing this but couldn't find
it. I'll bookmark the page.
