I accidentally sent this reply to Benjamin, sorry for the two copies:

I'm brand new on this list as well, so take what I say with a grain of  
salt, but a group of us here at PyCon are about to start sprinting,  
and they've given us some very good resources to help us get started.   
Brett Cannon is leading us, and he's put up some good info meant for  
the sprinters, but that should just apply anyway.  You can find the  
slides from his talk at:

Some important information that I took away from the slides is that  
there is a view into the python bug list where you have more control  
over display at:
http://www.taniquetil.com.ar/cgi-bin/pytickets.py

If you don't know what bugs to tackle, the python developers slap the  
'easy' keyword on the low hanging fruit, which should help you to pick  
something out.

Aside from that, they stressed that we should test test test before  
submitting patches to the bugtracker...
