I should clarify: I'm not the original author of that YAML setup; Chris
Dent is.

No; the test_the_TESTS function is imported into the test module, which
then yields the individual tests.

I must admit no; essentially, this current setup was conceived as the
simplest thing that could possibly work. Generally, we're striving to
stick to the very basics - which, admittedly, sometimes leads to
reinventing the wheel.
