For the time being I'm punting on this as I've been able to make do without SSL support.

The whole reason I tried to build with SSL is because the latest PIP (v 1.3.x) requires it. I just downgraded to PIP v1.2.1 to create 
a workable install...

It would be helpful to have clearer instructions / howtos for trying out different options in ropenssl.py as suggested below. It takes 
hours to build PyPy and then some time to test it.
