The free certs from startssl can be for subdomain.example.com and example.com,
but only those two. They offer wildcard certs as well, but you have to pay for
those, not sure how much.

It's also possible to serve separate certs from the same IP, but browser support
is not yet universal: no Windows XP browser supports it, nor do some mobile
