I've obviously been busy over the holidays but am now slowly getting back to the grind. Which reminds me - Happy New Year! :) I think a session on git/trac/irc would not go amiss but it really depends on the people that sign up. So far amongst the pyLadies group I have yet to see anyone sign up apart from Anu, you and me. We can maybe announce this on the blog and on Fb/meetup/email group? More importantly a quick intro from you on the dos and don'ts of contributing to open source (so people don't get disheartened) would be nice I think. Just to get one fact straight .. calling me or Manish a 'NVDA Core Developer' would be a wrong statement. We are trying to coordinate efforts to create a team which can contribute features useful for users in the Indian subcontinent. While Manish has been associated with NVDA as user and as a developer for a longer duration, I'm only few months old in this. Coming to the topic ..which is .. there is an interest in contributing to NVDA by certain persons and we want to create a environment in which they can start. I'm thinking of things to be done: Stage 1: (1) We update the wiki page at http://code.google.com/p/saksham-projects/wiki/InNvdaSource to make it usable ! (2) If needed, I can make screen cast(s) to explaining stuff. (3) We add interested people to the nvda-india-dev google group (4) We take some simple tickets and folks start working on them. I expect Stage 1 to take the Month of January. We can have IRC / audio conf timing pre defined to make this as easy as possible. After this stage, I think only serious people will want to keep going and that will be a good time for a hands on session. Highly personal opinion follows : The NVDA is a strange beast. On one hand, for the sighted people it takes a while to get 'hang' of a screen reader, and on the other hand, the particular set of technologies ( Windows+Python+Office Automation+Accessibility etc), makes it rather unattractive to lot of people. Also, last but not the least, it requires sighted developers to really think and analyze from a different perspective .. Manish and Nirmita can correct me here .. but I think that's the reason we have been seeing people leaving after a couple of months ( have been there and done that myself (-: ) , so I'm kind of trying to factor in the dropout rate in the plan. However if Nirmita & Manish think that we can start with a hands-on session first, I'll be okay to do that also. Does that sound like a plan ? -- Regards Vardhan From svaksha at gmail.com Sun Jan 5 19:53:20 2014 From: svaksha at gmail.com (svaksha) Date: Sun, 5 Jan 2014 18:53:20 +0000 Subject: [PyLadies-BLR] Fwd: NVDA project- introduction In-Reply-To: References: <008c01cf05f4$de754460$9b5fcd20$@cis-india.org> Message-ID: FYI. I've detailed this here: http://code.google.com/p/saksham-projects/wiki/WIPContextHelp ( Manish: Please go thru this, and see if description makes sense.) This only requires python hacking, and a little bit of wxwindows. While it will require some understanding of how NVDA works ( keybindings, modules etc ), a group of python hackers can certainly find that out by reading the NVDA code. ( debugging of NVDA code is not possible, as it freezes whole windows GUI ). Please see if there is a interest in developing this kind of plugin. People can first try to do simple plugin, and play with NVDA's python console to get familiar. Also, I think you mentioned a similar comment you got from the NVDA guys ( regarding developing a plugin ). In my opinion, developing plugin for NVDA can be a more satisfying than developing for core, as the code can reach the users faster, and development and positive impact on users can be much more. Thanx Vardhan
