Anyone who wants to start coding for the pyladies blog can start from there. Before starting, please share the directory structure if you are planning to change the directory structure, and a couple of other related information to help others also be aware of the coding style. Once coding is done, please send in a pull request for the same from your account to the pyladies blore git account, https://github.com/pyladiesblore/pyladiesblr. No problem. I'm happy to walk you (or anyone else) through the basics. Contributing to foss projects is not as hard as it is made out to be and shooting for small bugs makes it easier to start out. > If there's sufficient interest, I can arrange for the venue not a problem. Koramangala is far for me, so I'd prefer the CIS office, if they are willing to host us. (PS: I used to attend meets at the Domlur office and didnt know it has moved to Koramangala). Ofcourse, this depends on the interest, and if the earlier topic is not of interest please feel free to say so. I wont be offended :) The list is meant to encourage discussion of _your_ interests, so if you are interested in python basics, or learning something else, please say so. Personally speaking, I find the learning process easier while working on a specific task (..while I've ported to 3x before, this task is harder as I'm learning to port without breaking backward compatibility for 2.6/7). But that is me, mileages vary and different people learn differently. Feel free to discuss your preferences. IIRC, Kenneth Love had agreed to hold online sessions and I had suggested basic topics as I didnt know what people would be interested in. Anu, do you think there should be a poll for topics? Maybe someone would like to co-ordinate with him on the forum? He is also on IRC, #pyladies, so feel free to ping him in the channel. Before I talk about the sessions, I would like to introduce y'all to Kenneth Love. He is a self taught programmer who learnt a lot of things on his own. More importantly, he is a Django guru. Read more about him on his website, http://gigantuan.net/ Based on what I have seen so far of this group, the ladies and men on this group are relatively new to Python and are keen on learning Python. So, I think its a good idea to understand people's need and what they want from mentoring. So Kenneth created a google document so that people can start filling in their questions. The idea is to understand what people want and start have mentoring sessions based on those. The link is here, https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xUjSuRlWhWAbIxpRJ9I2yMlpS4_oMgXM262kZFLYCog/edit#heading=h.6bdu1j7mu62o. Please fill in you questions. As for the mentoring sessions, we are at Indian standard time (12.5 hours before Kenneth) and he is on the PST(US West Coast). So we need to decide on the time we would like him to hold sessions for us. I would like to arrive at a consensus for that. Please pitch in a time for that is comfortable for you. I will wait for sometime before I decide on the time. I will say this once again, you are free to ask any question. No question is stupid. Please do not end up trolling each other. From that aspect, I am working out a deal with a Pune based company that wants to set its foot in Bangalore to incubate talent. In the sense, the company is willing to take people that are trained from Pyladies Bangalore. I am really excited to work on this. I have been asking around women to seek what kind of work related enforcements that they would seek. This is what I gathered from them. 1. Married women with kids prefer a 20 hour / week arrangements. 2. They also prefer remote working.( This is just not women, this one is from both men and women). Given the long commute distances in Bangalore. 3. I am gathering information regarding internships opportunities for women to enhance their participation. I believe that we can do better if people believe that they can derive value out of Pyladies Bangalore. I am requesting all of you to encourage to open Pyladies chapter all over India. People from other areas are all also welcome to join this group. Also, I would request other people on this list to share what they would expect in terms of work arrangements. I am still playing around with the idea and exploring it. Any inputs from you people will be great. "He could have done the kind deed of giving it to the reporter." is innuendo at best, an outright accusation at worst. I for one don't remember seeing anyone from Pyladies at the conference. Anand, Vijay, Konark and the others were all overloaded with work for the conference and if they weren't there, there would be no PyCon India this year. For the record, there were many female volunteers too. If I were Anand, I don't I would have done the "kind deed", as you so unctuously put it, to give anyone your number or email address. As someone who was in charge of one of the earlier conferences, I know the stress that's associated with it and I'm not going to go out of my way to pass on email addresses and phone numbers of people who don't even show up for the event. Anand's a lot more nicer than me and he did pass on your contact information but you, instead of giving him the benefit of doubt, shot off an accusation and that too on a public mailing list. I remember the ruckus caused by Anand Pillai's github repository a while ago and there were lots of emails demanding disciplinary action from the PSF and an apology from him. I recollect a mail from you warning others of associating with him. While his taste in humour might be questionable, it was a joke and there was still a huge thread. This, on the other hand, is not a joke but an outright (false) accusation and I don't see the same interest by any of the people who participated on the previous thread. I'm very much in favour of making the conference accessible to as many people as possible and against anybody behaving in a way that makes other delegates uncomfortable. I have done work towards this in many ways which I don't want to elaborate here. However, the bottom line for a community event is work. If there's any organisation that wants to promote itself under PyCon India, we're happy to do so as long as it doesn't conflict with our general guidelines. The few volunteers are not going to go out of their ways to do the heavy lifting for the organisation. People from the organisation should be doing the hard work (e.g. the FSMK at this years event). I didn't see any such interest at PyCon India from PyLadies. I even reached out to the group for some help to find accomodations for an outstation female participant, I didn't get any replies. If this kind of apathy is what we're going to be seeing, I'm not very optimistic about what the future holds for pyladies Bangalore. And then, after this, to accuse one of the lead organisers of not doing the "kind deed" of sharing your contact information with a journalist makes you sound like nothing more than a vocal but annoying pipsqueak. This whole email is longer and harsher than what I usually write but I really needed to make this clear. You owe "Mr. Anand" and the whole list a public apology for the accusation, for not giving him the benefit of doubt and the general arrogant tone in your emails. Please check with him on the email that I sent out earlier very politely asking him to send me the details. Please dont tell me that I did not write back to you or respond to your emails. I have my work planned three months in advance, so its really not possible to work out things in three months. I have told you that I was late and even apologized for being late in spearheading the women participation. I have confirmation mails for both from your side and read email confirmation for the email that I sent to Anand Chitipothu. Apart from that, I don't see sense in getting others to see my view point. I will concern myself with working for Pyladies Bangalore. I have the reporters contact details and will have her make the statement in the newspapers itself. I am waiting for her reply. I don't see in any technical forum, you will have a different attitude from fellow members just because of your gender. Same holds true for Python mailing lists. Except for one time joke, which we all took exception of, I don't remember any incident where there was any kind of discrimination or different kind of attitude that was visible in any action of any member of any of the Python India mailing lists (http://python.org.in/). Pycon India is a volunteer activity and I know how much effort it goes in organizing any event. May be at times we don't have the data carved out to reflect all the details as it may need analysis and any kind of analysis require some work and time, which I doubt volunteers anywhere will have. Even then, I have seen a fantastic reports by few members which may not be related to Pycon Data per se. I am not sure if Pycon can provide you with the data as you need it. But certainly, if you will sound little less bitter, people will start coming out to help you out. Forget the past incident, as you seem still to be engrossed in that. World is a better place, give others a chance to prove that. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Here is the link to the site that tells about small bugs to solve, https://openhatch.org/. Here one find places to volunteer with open source projects. You can even sort based on small/big/critical bugs to start with. >From this website, we can start with small bugs for different open source projects. We can start the weekly dojos trying to solve these bugs. @Sunita, I am traveling this weekend and will definitely meet you next week. I have few things on mind that I want to talk about in the next weekend. I will send out the link for the google hangout atleast 15 minutes before the actual meeting time. Please look out for the link here on Pyladies mailing list few minutes before the meeting. 1. We will do one more session with Kenneth Love, the topic of which I will leave it out for you to decide. 2. I am talking to three colleges in Bangalore, one college in Mysore, for holding an intro to Python workshop. Anyone wants to take this forward, please let me know. I am more than happy to fund your expenses. Please ensure this is a community event and remains so. 3. One important thing that I want to ensure is, I want draft a woman friendly code of conduct and have it in place before I start rolling out the intro to python workshops in Bangalore and Mysore. I am talking to someone from the Ada initiative for that. 4. I also realized the importance of github, hence I think we should do an intro to git workshop as well. For now, I am restraining myself to Python. Lets see if we can do an intro to git as well. 5. I am talking to people in other cities to start Pyladies chapters in the respective cities as well. If you know someone in other cities who are willing to take up the initiative, please link me up with them. 6. I am talking to Srishti Sethi, and Philipp Schmidt from MIT media labs who are pushing an online conference platform at MIT. We can try and do a session with that software to see if it fits our needs. The earliest date that I can get with is in November. Please let me know what dates are comfortable for that. If there is anything else, anyone wants to do after this, please let me know offline and we can discuss its feasibility and work it out. I look forward to seeing you all the meetup! I am nodding my head mostly to whatever you have penned down - love the idea of doing a workshop on Python at colleges - the best way to learn something imho is to actually teach it. Python is brilliant for beginners.
