From gslindstrom at gmail.com Tue Sep 2 04:25:50 2008 From: gslindstrom at gmail.com (Greg Lindstrom) Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2008 21:25:50 -0500 Subject: [PyAR2] More funding letters Message-ID: I sent out requests for funds to the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce and Conway City Hall thinking that bringing in folks for a conference might be good for business. I expect the check from SW Energy this week as well as responses from Acxiom and Windstream. We still need $300.00 and more would be nice. We're 1 month away and things look good; we have 27 registered. I'll wait to see if we get any results from the letters I sent out to Faulkner County Schools last week and will send out a reminder letter next week. If our numbers are still low, I'll expand to Pulaski County as well. I also found a stack of OReilly bookmarks that we can swag. It advertises the discount code for a users group. --greg -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was planning on photocopying the articles from my copies of the magazine. Python Magazine is on the bottom of each page and Terry is credited on the title page. It is a fantastic series and I hope it gets people interested in pyGame. I have a 50 minute session, so I probably will only get to the second article (this is more of a show-and-tell). I expect roughly 20 people in the session, but it's an absolute guess at this point. Thank you so much for all you are doing for us. My wife runs www.wearpython.com and we have a good idea what it feels like for people to ask for things. Your response to all of our requests has impressed us. Thank you, Terry, for giving us permission to use this and for writing the articles in the first place. If you're willing, maybe next year we can look into flying you to Arkansas to present an actual class (Jeff Rush and Noah Gift are coming this year). For now, though, I've got my hands full with this years conference :-) Best regards, --greg On Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:05 AM, php|architect wrote: > Hi Greg, > > I have good news for you. I'm a little concerned about money; we have $260.00 in the bank with $500.00 coming. I was hoping to meet with the Conway Chamber of Commerce yesterday (Thursday), but that has been put off until later next week. We need to let UCA know what software to load on their machines. I will have them load Python 2.5 and pyGame for my talks. What other software do we want? Please specify name, version and an address where it can be found so I can pass it on to UCA. I'm having reservations about the Django class or, at least, me leading it. Is there someone else comfortable enough with it to do a 50-minute "show and tell" type talk? The other option is dropping it and letting Jeff Rush do a talk on Python Eggs. Do we want any kind of registration? Is there a need for it? How do we intend to hand out swag (the stuff everyone gets, that is). We received a copy of the Noah Gift/Jeremy Jones book "Python for Unix and Linux System Administration" to give away. I think we should hand that out in his class at some point. Currently, we have 29 people signed up to attend. I will be sending out another round of invitations to the Faulkner County High Schools and, perhaps, include a few more "random" schools for the list (we have 73 High Schools in the 7 County region). Let me know about any concerns/issues you have. There are people driving substantial distances to attend, so I really want to put on a good meeting. Yes, I am definitely coming, no doubts about it. Whether I'll get there early enough for dinner, I don't know. It is a long drive from Dallas. A number of us are carpooling and we will be staying into Sunday afternoon. If there were any sprinting or social opportunities on Sunday, that would be great. I presume that is Python 2.5 and not the old standby 1.5.2. ;-) I think the only ones I'd like to see added are Setuptools, VirtualEnv, Nevow and Durus. Both are in the Cheeseshop and can be installed (as an admin) with a single 'easy_install' command. wget http://peak.telecommunity.com/dist/ez_setup.py python2.5 ez_setup.py easy_install virtualenv nevow durus -Jeff From noah.gift at gmail.com Sun Sep 14 21:52:51 2008 From: noah.gift at gmail.com (Noah Gift) Date: Sun, 14 Sep 2008 15:52:51 -0400 Subject: [PyAR2] pyArkansas: Rounding the corner In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 3:48 PM, Greg Lindstrom wrote: > I am sending out 18 more invitations to the conference; a reminder to all > of the High Schools in Faulkner County and a first invitation to all the > High Schools in Pulaski County. How about: - $750.00 donation to cover the remaining costs (and get a jump on -- gulp -- next year) - The CoC will get hotel rooms for Jeff Rush and Noah Gift (Friday and Saturday) - He is going to see about Restaurant Gift Certificates so we can take them out, too. - Other stuff that we keep until the actual conference Chad also is sending me information on how to solicit the Conway Advertising and Promotions committee about getting money for 2009 (more on that later) and has lots of other ideas. He really was positive. Jeff and Noah...it looks like we will be picking up the hotel, so don't make reservations!! Noah, if you could split the airfare with us, I think we can reimburse you for a car to get to Conway from the airport (or, if you want to get the car and have us get the ticket; let us know). I sent out another round of invitations to 17 more High Schools last week, so I expect more people. We have many more experienced users than we originally planned. We have been asked if it would be possible to have "Open Space" and/or "Lightning Talks", sort of a "Show-and-Tell" session where anyone can stand up and address an audience. Would it be possible to get another classroom in the afternoon (during the first and second "talk" session) for this? It would not require any software to be installed. A projector and some seats is all we would need. We would have a sheet where people could sign up in the morning to give an afternoon talk. This is a common practice at most "un-conferences"; we didn't anticipate having the more advanced users this year. Another way we could address this is to add 30 minutes to the final session, extending the conference to 4:00. We would allow 2 or 3 people to have 8 minutes each to give a quick ("lightning") talk on their topic. This would be a great way for our new students to see what can be done with Python. The drawback is that it extends your day another 30 minutes. Is either of these suggestions possible? Of the two, I think I would favor the 4th classroom to give ample time to the speakers and relieve some (possible) overcrowding. Thanks for your help, --greg -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
