From don at sheu.com Wed Aug 12 03:26:14 2015 From: don at sheu.com (Don Sheu) Date: Tue, 11 Aug 2015 18:26:14 -0700 Subject: [PuPPy] Cool post on Baypiggies of a self-study code group Message-ID: Saw this and wanted to share with everybody: I hope that it's okay to post this to the list. We're a group in Berkeley called Code Self Study ( http://www.meetup.com/codeselfstudy/ ) that meets at least twice per week to study programming. The group is open to all languages, but probably 70-80% of members are focused on Python. The events are free and open to all levels of experience. * Beginners can get help with their tutorials, projects, and exercises. * Experienced programmers can mentor the beginners and/or work on their own projects. We have an optional project-based format where people can split into groups for monthly projects. At the end of each month, the groups demo their projects on the projector. If anyone would like to give a presentation on a Python topic on a Wednesday or Saturday, send me an email. The meeting rooms can comfortably hold up to about 30 people (or more, depending on the day), and there is a projector. There are many events in San Francisco, South Bay, and Oakland, but not much going on in Berkeley, so we're meeting at least twice per week over here---more often when we can find event space. One goal of the group is to rent a dedicated space to create a kind of self-directed educational center for programmers in Berkeley. If the idea of a programming space in Berkeley interests you and you would like to help with the project, there is more information here: http://codeselfstudy.com/edu If you're learning Python or are interested in helping people learn Python, hope to see you at one of our meetings. Congratulations and a big "Thank You"! to all involved. http://blog.jupyter.org/2015/08/12/first-release-of-jupyter/ _______________________________________________ Baypiggies mailing list Baypiggies at python.org To change your subscription options or unsubscribe: https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/baypiggies From don at sheu.com Sat Aug 15 16:06:50 2015 From: don at sheu.com (Don Sheu) Date: Sat, 15 Aug 2015 14:06:50 +0000 Subject: [PuPPy] Netflix Dumping Last of Owned Datacenter Message-ID: http://www.geek.com/chips/netflix-is-shutting-down-their-last-data-center-1631152/ From don at sheu.com Mon Aug 17 16:21:31 2015 From: don at sheu.com (Don Sheu) Date: Mon, 17 Aug 2015 14:21:31 +0000 Subject: [PuPPy] Building NY Times Next Recommendation Engine Message-ID: http://open.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/11/building-the-next-new-york-times-recommendation-engine/ From don at sheu.com Wed Aug 19 17:44:38 2015 From: don at sheu.com (Don Sheu) Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2015 08:44:38 -0700 Subject: [PuPPy] Pythonistas Behind Paypal Acquisition of Harper Reed's Modest Company Message-ID: Harper Reed if an Atlantic article from November 2012 is believed, is the key agent for Obama's successful election over GOP candidate Mitt Romney. Though the Obama for America campaign used many different technologies, Harper was a member of ChiPy. Also when he was CTO of Threadless, my friend Brian Ray helped him move the company to a Python-centric tech stack. A big engine of Paypal's recent success is Braintree and Venmo. Braintree and Venmo were acquired by Paypal for what seemed a monster sum of $800m over a year ago. Of course with Stripe's recent valuations, seems Paypal got a bargain. Adam Forsyth a principal engineer at Braintree and their community engagement lead is a big supporter of the Python community. Adam has sponsored many ChiPy events. He's hosted my PyCon Startup Row pitch event in Chicago. He's joined the organizing team of ChiPy. Adam sponsored our first ever meeting held at Redfin. He paid for the tacos. Payments is a good business. It'll be interesting to see how the combination of Harper, Adam, and Dylan Richard does to drive the Python community in Chicago. Historically the Python community in Chicago has produced many contributors to the global Python community. -- Don Sheu ???
