[Patches] Final request for GC patch

Neil (or Charles),

Now that Vladimir's memory patches are in, could you generate another
version of your GC patch?  I think I'm ready to incorporate this now
as an experimental feature, but I don't have the time to deal with all
the FAILED hunks that patch complains about...

Also, Greg Stein is right that the spare fields should be renamed
unconditionally.
