Some quick points, where others can also chip in: 1. Given that there are only 3h available, what we will cover is a basic introduction to Python. However, it would be good if the college people could fill in with whether there is some special topic that the audience might be interested in. 2. Are there any other volunteers planning to attend? If so, please follow up here. 3. Again, to the college contacts, I will stress that it is important that each student attending the workshop have a computer that already has Python installed on it. Ideally, this would be a Linux machine as I can help out with issues there, but Python can also be installed on Windows/Mac/etc. Regards, Gora On 11 September 2014 15:05, konark modi wrote: > Hi All, > > We have finalized the first workshop for PythonExpress for NCR region. > This workshop will happen at *Ramanujan College, near DeshBandhu College > (Kalkaji , New Delhi - 19). * > > Following are the details: > > Date: 15th September - Monday > Time: 2 - 5 PM > > Location contact person : *Mr. Jatin* : 9910171860 > Instructor : *Mr. Gora Mohanty* : 9868527992 > > Target Audience : 50 - 60 students. > > > *Note : * > Please ensure that each student for the workshop will be have a machine to > work and try live coding example. > > The instructor and volunteers for this workshop are expected to reach the > venue at least at 1:30 PM and co-ordinate with the contact persons at the > location for setup etc. > > All the other volunteers of NCR region, who wish to conduct workshop are > encouraged to be present there so as to discuss further steps and dates for > upcoming > workshops. > > Regards > Konark Modi > +91-8800223003 > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The installer is a pretty standard Windows installer, and the only thing you'll need to do after installing the distribution is add the Python binaries directory to your PATH. You can even skip that bit if you just use IDLE for you lessons, which gets installed along with the distribution and placed in the Start menu. If you're using Python 3 you should also get pip and virtualenv, but I'm not certain if they're included in the Windows distribution (though I see no reason why they shouldn't be). The advantage to using alternative distributions is that they usually come with a bunch of useful libraries and development tools pre-installed, include Windows-specific development tools (PythonWin, for instance), and occasionally have nicely formatted documentation. You can use them for a beginners' class, but your students will probably never touch 90% of the included functionality. I highly recommend spinning up a Windows VM or borrowing a Windows computer and trying these things out yourself before the class. If you want the class to be effective, you need to see what your students will see when they set up Python on their computers themselves. You don't want to run into issues you cannot solve in the middle of the workshop :) -- Ankur Sethi http://ankursethi.in From noufal at gmail.com Fri Sep 12 10:45:19 2014 From: noufal at gmail.com (Noufal Ibrahim) Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2014 14:15:19 +0530 Subject: [Ncr-Python.in] Best Python Distributions In-Reply-To: (Ankur Sethi's message of "Fri, 12 Sep 2014 13:25:50 +0530") References: Message-ID: <87tx4dz0ps.fsf@gmail.com> On Fri, Sep 12 2014, Ankur Sethi wrote: [...] > I highly recommend spinning up a Windows VM or borrowing a Windows > computer and trying these things out yourself before the class. Jatin, please do follow up with your comments, and also those from others if you can manage to get such comments. I would like complete honesty, especially about aspects that they did not like, and comments should be anonymous in order to encourage frankness. * Jatin, and others (sorry, but forgot the names of other organisers, but please thank them on my behalf) had put in a lot of effort to put together the workshop. I also felt that there was strong support from faculty at Ramanujan College, which is always good to see. - We covered a basic introduction to Python in the first couple of hours, built around Arulalan's tutorial, and other introductory ones. It was also nice that everyone had a laptop set up with Python. - I enjoyed myself, but felt that we were losing people's interest by the third hour. IMHO, there is still too much of a gap between the level of preparedness of students, and what would be engaging. This is understandable, but somehow needs to be bridged. Into the second hour of a tutorial introduction to Python, even my eyes would be glazing over if I were in the audience. * The issue now is to how to sustain this interest, and make such workshops be more meaningful than an annual event whenever Pycon India. - I think that the only way to bridge the gap between students, and instructors, is by enabling the growth of student Python groups. This allows newcomers access to peer learning, and develops Python resources to an extent that we as Pycon India, or other smaller interest groups cannot match. - Broader groups such as NCR-Python, or Pycon India, can be brought in where more in-depth expertise is needed, Say, the student group has been working on developing a game using Pygames, external volunteers can help them: (a) Get started, (b) Have follow-up workshops to solve issues. - This needs much more involvement from both students, and instructors. It would have been great to have more volunteer instructors at the meeting. My thanks to everyone who put in their time and effort into making this a success. I also believe the same that workshops are meaningful, if we *work* through the workshop, otherwise that would be more of a talk or a lecture. So, next time if we happen to host/organize we will target to make something meaningful in Python o and then we will try to discuss/implement that thing in the workshop(better say it as a meetup) or discuss some cool things of Python like using it to automate pi (we have two in our college) or something like that.
