Thanks... harry Yes, it most probably is. In MoinMoin 1.2.4, the antispam code does not have a timeout. That means that it waits until the main server (http://moinmaster.wikiwikiweb.de/) answers with a list of all banned entries. And because the main server is unstable in these days (problems with Apache), every wiki notices the outages. Workaround: disable antispam code. Solution: get 1.3 with an improved antispam module. MoinMoin 1.3 will be released in this month. Anyone > else have a similar experience? Except problems with 1.2.4 antispam an moinmaster.wikiwikiweb.de outages (sorry, we are working on it), which are easily to check if you just visit that site manually, it can also be a broken DNS on your site which causes long delays on save. moin does a reverse DNS lookup on the ip of the editor - if DNS is broken, the timeout can take quite some time... Although it says this is pre-1.3 stuff I have adopted this as I have no idea how should I install for 1.3 Would someone tell me what is the installation procedure for 1.3? I am running Windox XP and Python2.4 and IIS5.1 Before creating a wiki instance, you have to download and install the basic MoinMoin software. We assume you already have downloaded the distribution archive to the "C:\TEMP" directory. Open a console window and enter the following commands: C: cd \temp unzip moin-1.3.zip cd moin-1.3 python setup.py install --prefix=C:\Moin --record=install.log This will install all necessary files to the "C:\Moin" directory, and create a "install.log" file listing all the files that are created there. Creating a Wiki Instance Enter these commands in a console window: cd \Moin md mywiki md mywiki\data md mywiki\underlay xcopy share\moin\data mywiki\data /E xcopy share\moin\underlay mywiki\underlay /E copy share\moin\server\moin.cgi mywiki\ copy share\moin\htdocs\index.html mywiki\default.htm "mywiki" is the name of your wiki instance, you might want to chose a different name best fitting the intended use of this instance; just don't name it simply "wiki", because that would result in confusion and problems later on. We have to make sure that moin.cgi can find the MoinMoin directory, so that "import MoinMoin" will work. The easiest way to make sure MoinMoin can be imported is to append to sys.path within moin.cgi. You can change the first two lines of code in moin.cgi to something like this: Toggle line numbers 1 #!python 2 import sys 3 sys.path.append(r'C:\Moin\Lib\site-packages') Notice that we're pointing to the directory which contains the MoinMoin directory, not the directory itself. Next, you'll need to create two virtual directories in IIS. One for the shared data, and one for this specific wiki instance. Go to Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Internet Information Service. Open up the tree to Default Web Site. Right click on Default Web Site and choose New => Virtual directory. This will bring up a wizard with the manditory useless first screen, hit next. Enter "wiki" for the alias name and hit next. Browse to "C:\Moin\share\moin\htdocs" and hit next. Leave the Access permissions at their defaults and hit next. And now you're done, hit finish! Now follow the same steps, but set the alias to "mywiki" and the path to "C:\Moin\mywiki". Use IIS Admin to remove permissions to read the data directory: expand the "mywiki" node, right click on data, select Properties, and uncheck Read. Repeat these steps with the underlay directory. Now you need to setup the 'mywiki' alias so that it will run Python to interpret .cgi files. Right click on your new 'mywiki' alias and choose Properties. On the first tab (Virtual Directory), click the Configuration button. The first tab is the App Mappings tab, which defines which programs to use for each file exetension. Click Add. Browse to your python.exe (probably something like c:\pythonXX\python.exe). Then add -u %s %s after the Python executable path. The Executable line will look something like this: C:\Python22\python.exe -u %s %s. In the Extension box enter .cgi with the begining period. Confirm that the Check that file exists option is not checked (if it is, MoinMoin won't be able to display sub pages). Ok, you're done with the alias configuration, click OK several times to get back out of all the dialog boxes. If you add another wiki instance, you'll only need to setup the reference to its folder, they can safely share the "wiki" alias which points to static files only. If you read the CHANGES file, you'll see this bit: Upgrading your wiki - critical information If you are NOT starting from scratch, you MUST convert your existing data using the script MoinMoin/scripts/migration/12_to_13_migN.py. If you run moin 1.2.x, begin with N=1 and proceed with incrementing numbers. If you already run some old 1.3 patchlevel, see the script comments about what you need to apply. If the debian package maintainer is on this list you may want to set the option "raiseexception" to 0 not 1 by default in antispam.py. It scared me for a bit there and I ended up having to debug code. Admin's shouldn't have to do that. Anyway Moin rocks :) Regards, Lee p.s. I would like to second panta-admin's request for making show_hosts a little more fine grained. Something so I can click on the entry and show detailed info, ie username, IP and reverse dns's on a separate page would be ideal. The process hasn't been without problems, but overall went pretty smoothly for such a big upgrade. There's one issue I do have with the upgrade, though. In 1.2, the supplied help pages were part of the instance data, whereas in 1.3 they have been moved to the "underlay" directory. I never made any changes to the supplied help files in my 1.2 instance, so I would like to remove them - both to get rid of the maintenance burden, and to get the new 1.3 versions automatically. As far as I can see, the migration process doesn't do anything about this. What do I have to do to locate and remove the pages from my existing Wiki which are now served from the underlay directory? Thanks, Paul. Under 1.2, I was using mod_python to serve my Moin instance, but I'd like to move to Twisted for 1.3. However, I want to "hide" my Moin instance behind an Apache server using mod_proxy. If I (naively) try ProxyPass /mywiki http://localhost:8080/ ProxyPassReverse /mywiki http://localhost:8080/ then the pages get served OK, but the CSS and images are lost. I understand that this is due to the /wiki URL not being proxied, and I can work around this by using an extra ProxyPass for /wiki. However, I'd rather isolate things via a single proxy setting (imagine I set up a second wiki on the same server - I'd have a clash on the /wiki URL). Is this possible? I gather that the Twisted VHostMonsterResource is designed to address this type of issue, but I don't know how it should work - AFAICT, Moin doesn't include VHostMonsterResource support in its base code, and I can't see how to subclass/configure to add it. Thanks, Paul. PS On a slightly related note, how do I modify the Twisted service to serve additional static files - logo images and the like? MoinMoin is an easy to use, full-featured and extensible wiki software package written in Python. It can fulfill a wide range of roles, such as a personal notes organizer deployed on a laptop or home web server, a company knowledge base deployed on an intranet, or an Internet server open to individuals sharing the same interests, goals or projects. A wiki is a collaborative hypertext environment with an emphasis on easy manipulation of information. Major new features in this branch: ================================== * MoinMoin speaks your language! Complete Unicode support, translated system and help pages in more than ten languages, and support for languages written from right to left are the base features of our internationalisation support. * Fresh look and feel. New default user interface design, improved existing themes and enhanced theme plug-in framework that make it easier to modify the design or create completely new user interface. * Find anything on your wiki, instantly. New search engine and streamlined Google-like search interface, using multiple search terms, regular expressions, search term modifiers and boolean search. * Antispam - keep spammers out of you wiki. Protect your wiki with automatically updated spam patterns maintained on the MoinMaster wiki, and shared by all MoinMoin wikis worlwide. * Underlay directory - easy upgrade and maintenance. New streamlined directory layout protects all system and help pages in a separate underlay directory. * Run with your favorite server. Use either a standalone server that requires only Python, the high performance Twisted server, Apache with Fast CGI, mod_python or plain CGI. * Multiconfig - easier, more powerful configuration. New class-based configuration allow you to easily configure single or multiple wikis sharing a common setup. * Many more features and various bug fixes. For a more detailed list of changes, see the CHANGES file in the distribution or http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/MoinMoinRelease1.3/CHANGES MoinMoin History ================ MoinMoin has been around since year 2000. Most of the codebase was written by J?rgen Hermann; it is currently being developed by a growing team. Being originally based on PikiPiki, it has evolved heavily since then (PikiPiki and MoinMoin 0.1 consisted of just one file!). Many large enterprises have been using MoinMoin as a key tool of their intranet, some even use it for their public web page. A large number of Open Source projects use MoinMoin for communication and documentation. Of course there is also a large number of private installations. This is a little annoying but I can work around this. However, what I have a real problem with is that in 1.2 it was possible to include extra line breaks and other formatting within elements and still have the numbering continue on correctly, but 1.3.1 does not allow this. For example: ---------- snip ---------- 1. Firstly, do this: {{{ some command }}} 1. Then do this: {{{ another command }}} '''Make sure xyz still works after this command runs.''' 1. Finally, do that. ---------- snip ---------- This sort of thing worked very well for creating lists of instructions in 1.2, but in 1.3.1 you just get "1." for each item in the output instead of ascending numbers. Is there any chance of this being fixed? I found the same problem. It can be done by a slight rewriting: 1. Firstly, do this: {{{ some command}}} 1. Then do this: {{{ another command}}}'''Make sure xyz still works after this command runs.''' 1. Finally, do that. I am currently setting up a MoinMoin powered website and I would like to optimize the website in regard to positioning for certain phrase/keywords, taking Google's PageRank[1] into consideration. Let's say that my phrase is "yoga for pregnant women". I would like my website to be high on Google when somebody enters this phrase. So I set the Wiki name to "Yoga for Pregnant Women". Then, I want many links to my website, from subpages or from external pages. Of course, I would like the linked text to be my phrase, like this: Yoga for Pregnant Women So I set up permanent link on NaviBar, that points to a subpage named "Yoga for Pregnant Women". That's cool, every subpage contains link, pointing the main page of my wiki, with linked text matchin my keyword-phrase. There's one thing that I don't like about it. If my wiki's name and the main page's name are the same, the main page's title looks like this: Yoga for Pregnant Women - Yoga for Pregnant Women I would like the main page's title to look more like this: Some Welcome Text - Yoga for Pregnant Women I can get it when the main page is named "Some Welcome Text". But I don't want links from every subpage with "Some Welcome Text" as linked text. So I figured out a solution. Links from subpages point to "Yoga for Pregnant Women". The subpage of this name exists, but redirects to "Some Welcome Text". This allows me to achieve two goals: have many links to main page with "Yoga for Pregnant Women" as linked text and to have "Some Welcome Text " as beginning of my title (it appears in Google search in bold font). The only disadvantage is the message from wiki: "Redirected from...", but I can live with that. That's my story. I'd like to hear from you, if anybody tried such techniques and maybe has some more tips for PageRank optimization in MoinMoin wiki. If they did, it would be too easy to artificially inflate one's page ranking in this manner. The point is to find sites that others are linking to. Make a good site that is valuable on that topic, and links will come. I don't plan to help any attempts to beat the system. It'll just piss me off when I'm searching for good sites and get bad results. Cheers, Mike -- Michael P. See pages 28-34 from this document: http://www.voelspriet2.nl/PageRank.pdf According to this document, by choosing the way of internal linking (interlinking) you can't arrificially boost your tie's total PageRank, but you can influence PR allocation, you can "distribute" PR as you wish, across subpages, that is the point. If Google considers those links when asking for "backward links", it probably counts them in PageRank. > The point is to find sites that others are linking to. Make a good site > that is valuable on that topic, and links will come. You're right. The valuable content is the most important thing. Do you mean that trying to distribute PR across the site (and that's is what I want to do) is cheating and hurting the Google's ability to provide good search results? As far as I know, in 1.2.3 the only pages set to index are the FrontPage and TitleIndex. You'll need to edit wikiaction.py so that when there's an action= string it will not index, and when there's no action string (or the page is the 'create this page' page) that it will index. it is a tad bit of work, though -- but if you spend the time doing this then your site will index more naturally. -philip neustrom __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? So far, I've been the only one adding content, which hasn't been much. The proof-of-concept has been blessed, but I've run into a few snags which I'd like to resolve before relocating MoinMoin from the slow sandbox to a quicker (supported) platform. For this e-mail I'll focus on just the one issue to keep thread clutter to a minimum. :-) I noticed that overall the performance of MoinMoin is pretty reasonable, given the hardware platform I'm got it on. However, there's a noticeable delay after clicking Save Changes (after doing Edit/Preview). I've tried this a number of times (on various days) and this delay is consistent. Typically it seems to be at least 5 seconds, but there have been occasions where it's gone on for much longer. After rooting around the moinmoin website docco, I added these to moin_config.py: show_timings = 1 show_version = 1 Both caused a couple interesting details to surface. First, the results of a Preview: * send_page = 0.323s * total = 0.847s * run = 0.534s And now for a Save Changes: * send_page = 0.407s * total = 8.350s * run = 7.781s (Quick sidebar: The show_version displayed this: "MoinMoin 1.187, Copyright ? 2000-2004 by J?rgen Hermann". Odd that it doesn't show version 1.2.4, or?) So I tried to determine why the delay. Surely it didn't take that long to post a simple file edit...? With another window open, I was able to strace the python process immediately after I hit Save Changes. What struck me was that the following line repeats for the majority of the trace: futex(0x804a160, FUTEX_WAKE, 1, {4, 1074731520}) = 0 And a little earlier in the trace, this: connect(4, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(8000), sin_addr=inet_addr("83.137.100.43")}, 16) = 0 I'm not sure they're related, but I suspect they are. Since this wiki is on a private intranet, my first question is, how do I stop Moin from trying to connect to 83.137.100.43? Presumably it's trying to update the interwiki...? Doing so would be of no benefit to anyone else, since noone external to our company can reach our VLAN. :) Second question, is the delay related to the connection to 83.137.100.43? I did try to research this on the moinmoin site, but ended up finding finding references to farmconfig.py, which doesn't seem to exist in 1.2.4. I'll save the description of my attempt to upgrade to 1.3.1 for another thread. Also, I'll save the description of some curious behaviour after enabling the wiki to use mod_python for yet another thread. :) Let me know your thoughts/suggestions on optimizing the performance post-Save Changes. jc From tw-public at gmx.de Thu Dec 23 10:39:00 2004 From: tw-public at gmx.de (Thomas Waldmann) Date: Thu Dec 23 10:39:00 2004 Subject: [Moin-user] =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Re=3A_=5BMoin-user=5D_Problems_with_Page_?= =?ISO-8859-1?Q?=22Aktuelle_=C4nderungen=22_on_German_WiKI?= In-Reply-To: <41CA7C63.6070706@vitronic.com> References: <41CA7C63.6070706@vitronic.com> Message-ID: <41CB0F4C.2010801@gmx.de> Hi Johannes, > Opening the link "Aktuelle?nderungen" ("CurrentChanges") leads to > problems with the special char "?" in the Wiki-Link: > > the "?" is misinterpeted, a "new page" with the title, containig the > misinterpreted "?", is opened > > The "?" is misinterpreted as questionmark> (as a graphical sign) - the new page which will be > created has the title "Aktuelle< questionmark>derungen". > > Any idea how to allow german umlaute in Wiki-Links? They are, per default. You can even have chinese or hebrew chars in wikilinks. Any non-broken browser should get it correctly. Mozilla, Firefox (even IE). But I have seen a broken Konqueror version yesterday, that showed some strange behaviour: First it followed the link correctly and displayed correct page. When just reloading that URL by pressing enter in the URL line, it went to a wrong page (with that funny character in pagename). The Apache web site docs for .htaccess files recommends that you not use them if you have access to httpd.conf. If you have the bug-free version of mod-python that is loaded automatically in the current Apache version, changing from cgi to mod-python requires only commenting out one statement and adding an equivalent location directive: ''' #ScriptAlias /mywiki "/somepath/Moin/mywiki/moin.cgi" SetHandler python-program PythonPath "['/somepath/Moin/mywiki/']+sys.path" PythonHandler MoinMoin.request::RequestModPy.run PythonDebug On ''' Note the location directive authorizes a program -- the program can do whatever it wants subject to OS permissions. Directory statements and .htaccess end up doing the same, but tend to give a false sense that they are somehow giving access to one directory and protecting others. Fascinating. I did as you suggested and it worked exactly as you said it would. And yet it's puzzling that my .htaccess approach didn't work, since all it had was the SetHandler/PythonPath/PythonHandler/PythonDebug lines. At this point I'm not about to scrutinize it to death, since it now works. > Directory statements and .htaccess end up doing the same, but > tend to give a false sense that they are somehow giving > access to one directory and protecting others. My intent wasn't to facilitate directory-level access control, but rather a) follow the MoinMoin docco (the only thing I did differently was to drop the / lines and push the .htaccess file down one directory; I couldn't get it to work as per the MoinMoin docco) and b) make it trivial to create another wiki without resorting to editing httpd.conf and forcing an httpd restart. Based on your very helpful recommendations, the former would appear to need an update, and the latter a failed exercise. Given that this is a Red Hat box, I may try to break the meaninful chunks out of httpd.conf and put them (read: the master Moin definition and separate files for each wiki) into /etc/httpd/conf.d/. Anyway, this is something I can fiddle with. I'll share my results with the Dev team if they're interested, assuming it turns out to be relatively clean. Thanks again for your lucid explanation. :) > Roger Haase jc From jcarroll at totality.com Fri Dec 24 13:49:01 2004 From: jcarroll at totality.com (Jim Carroll) Date: Fri Dec 24 13:49:01 2004 Subject: [Moin-user] upgrading from 1.2.4 to 1.3.1 Message-ID: [This is the last of the 3 hurdles I've been trying to resolve.] I recently tried to upgrade from 1.2.4 to 1.3.1 without success. Scrolling down through the various versions, for 1.3 it says to refer to the CHANGES file for upgrade details. - reviewing CHANGES, no instructions in the 1.3.1 section, but in the 1.3.0 it says to refer to README.migration - following the README.migration instructions, I copied aacom/data to the directory where the scripts are, then ran through each of them once. No errors reported. At this point the directions just sorta fade away. It doesn't say whether to overlay the new data directory on top of the original, or whether to blow away the original and drop this one in its place. Hoping that one or the other would remediate the above problem, first I renamed the original data dir then copied the new one into place. I made sure the perms were correct, of course. - copied the data dir to the migration dir and ran through the 12_to_13_mig?.py scripts, in order; renamed original data dir to data.orig and copied modified data dir back into wiki. chmod -R apache:apache on data dir. Tried wiki, got same error as shown above. - renamed original data dir back to 'data' and copied modified data dir overtop this dir. chmod -R apache:apache data. Tried wiki, got same error as shown above. No doubt I should have stopped after getting the python error the first time. So did I follow the correct docco? If so, where did I go wrong, and if not, where can the authoritative upgrade docco be found? I tried 2 and then 1 and got the same error message. Also tried running FastCGI after disabling scgi but that didn't work either. I suspect the "Invalid argument" message is misleading and there is something wrong with the basic socket object but I have no idea what it is. The socket error was not really a helpful clue. After correcting that mistake I still could not get fastcgi to work but that turned out to be due to the fact that I was running suexec as the FastCGIWrapper and it won't run aif the user is root. Since I don't really understand suexec anyway, I just commented the FastCGIWrapper directive out and all appears to be working. Premise: http_auth_enabled isn't very interesting (as is) when all of your users are authenticated via a trusted mechanism as they all must go through a second sign-on process (admittedly, only once). My patch includes a couple bits: 1) adds an auto_account variable to multiconfig.py (defaults to 0 of course). 2) Modifies User.__init__ in user.py such that, if auto_account and http_auth_enabled are both set, default some user information and save it. 3) Modifies normalizeName in user.py such that "." and "@" are permissible characters in usernames. This is necessary for my environment because we use mod_pubcookie for authentication. mod_pubcookie returns userids like "geek at ANDREW.CMU.EDU" (e.g. the Kerberos domain is part of the id). If this patch is accepted I'll update the appropriate documentation. If the documentation has to come first, let me know and I'll deal with it. -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... The directory statement should do no harm (it has an unmatched double quote) unless you also have a ScriptAlias statement pointing to it left over from using cgi. Double check that and comment any remaining ScriptAlias and the directory statement out. The docs for installing Moin with mod_python are a mess. This may be partly Apache's fault with so many alternatives that end up doing much the same thing: Directory, Files, Location, and .htaccess files. As I am locked out of updating the Wiki master and underlay files, I can only add to the confusion here. I never did figure out what was wrong, but I wrote a setup script to bridge between setup.py and a working wiki under Apache. It configures a CGI, a wrapped mod-python and a non-wrapped mod-python. See http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/KevinKleinfelter if you are interested. MoinMoin is still harder to set up than Instiki, but perhaps others can use the script to ease initial setup of a MoinMoin wiki. _____ From: Kevin Kleinfelter [mailto:moin-user at kleinfelter.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 2004 11:04 PM To: 'moin-user at lists.sourceforge.net' Subject: 1.3.1 and mod_python I can *almost* get 1.3.1 to work w/mod_python. Or try MoinMoin DesktopEdition, it works out of the box: http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/AlexanderSchremmer/DesktopEdition Kind regards, Alexander From mark.volkert at rakekniven.de Fri Dec 31 04:33:13 2004 From: mark.volkert at rakekniven.de (Mark Volkert) Date: Fri Dec 31 04:33:13 2004 Subject: [Moin-user] Starting standaloneserver In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <200412300752.28341.mark.volkert@rakekniven.de> > Look for the lines in moin.py that state how to set your path correctly > (they begin with #). I played with them a lot, but no success. Anyway, it is silvester and you solution works for me perfectly ootb. For one thing, when I use Firefox 1.0 on Mac OS X (and only on Mac OS X), it crashes after pressing the preview button when editing a message. When I say crashes, the browser just dies leaving me with a talkback message. There is no error in the web logs. This happens to me using mod_python and also cgi. I haven't tried other methods. Anyone seen this?? The other thing is, I notice that browsing the pages is quick with mod_python and even with cgi version, but the edit and preview windows take a few seconds to display fully even using mod_python. Why isn't it slow like this when I press edit or preview on the moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de site? I also wonder if these two issues are connected, but I can't tell. I have the newest production version of apache (2.0.52) running with the worker mpm (multithreaded). I am using python 2.4, and mod_python 3.1.3. Any ideas? I really have no clue and I'm brand new to moinmoin. Other than these two issues it seems splendid! - Sam Nilsson From sam at servingpeace.com Fri Dec 31 21:32:03 2004 From: sam at servingpeace.com (Sam Nilsson) Date: Fri Dec 31 21:32:03 2004 Subject: [Moin-user] Speed and Browser Crash issues In-Reply-To: <41D62F00.2080601@servingpeace.com> References: <41D62F00.2080601@servingpeace.com> Message-ID: <41D635BF.6000708@servingpeace.com> Sam Nilsson wrote: > when I use Firefox 1.0 on Mac OS X (and only on Mac OS X), it crashes > after pressing the preview button when editing a message. It crashes every time with cgi and mod_python on apache2. - Sam From sam at servingpeace.com Fri Dec 31 22:57:02 2004 From: sam at servingpeace.com (Sam Nilsson) Date: Fri Dec 31 22:57:02 2004 Subject: [Moin-user] Speed and Browser Crash issues In-Reply-To: <41D635BF.6000708@servingpeace.com> References: <41D62F00.2080601@servingpeace.com> <41D635BF.6000708@servingpeace.com> Message-ID: <41D64991.3060306@servingpeace.com> Sam Nilsson wrote: >> when I use Firefox 1.0 on Mac OS X (and only on Mac OS X), it crashes >> after pressing the preview button when editing a message. I recompiled apache to use the prefork mpm instead of the worker mpm and now I have no problem with browser crashes. Weird! - Sam Nilsson
