Is there any way of changing the file creation date using python 2.7.3
under windows 7?
The problem is; I have 3000 photos taken on a digital camera during my
recent holiday. The digital camera time clock was off by 45 minutes. I
have photos(7000) taken on a second digital camera which had its time set
correctly!. I want to be able to merge the photos and have them all
sorted in the right sequence.
I have used python already to modify the EXIF data of these images to have
the correct date taken data. I would like the file creation date to
reflect this. (if only to prevent future confusion about which photos were
taken when)

With pywin32 installed you can do it using something like the following
script, which sets the create time to "now" (and leaving the file with a
create time *after* the modified time, which seems strange but works)

I dont have an answer (though it looks like Mark H has already answered question)
but the reason why vanilla python cannot do this is because Unix doesnt store
the create time.

I run two businesses from home, one of them a newly-minted Django house
currently developing its first product, the other an Alexander Technique
consultancy. It's about the second of these that I'm posting this time.
I'm possibly off-topic so I have already asked one of the leading lights
if it's okay to post. He said probably, in as many words, but if anyone
objects to me posting here on this subject I would be grateful if you'd
let me know.
What I'm interested in doing is using some kind of metric to measure the
*overall* effect of Alexander Technique (AT) lessons on a software
developer's productivity. Alexander Technique helps back pain,
repetitive strain injury and headaches and can also, anecdotally, help
you think more clearly.
We might use a version control system such as git to measure the number
of lines added or modified as a measure of work rate, for example. Is
anyone more up to date than me on how to measure progress in computing
projects? I'd be glad to hear from you.
The basic idea is very simple:
1. Do some developing
2. Measure the rate of work
3. Have 6 Alexander Technique lessons
4. Measure the rate of work after lessons
5. calculate the difference
6. Rinse, repeat with another developer
I'm seeking funding for these lessons as we speak, so they might cost
volunteers from melbourne-pug either very little, or nothing, Anyone
interested in giving it a try?
One thing that appears to distinguish the Alexander Technique is that
results stick. It isn't a therapy but a set of skills you learn. Once
learnt, it seems, these skills aren't easily forgotten. Your back stays
improved, or even goes on improving, even a year later.

About 20 years ago as a young developer and help desk analyst I had a
back injury then a repetitive strain injury that between them forced me
to stop work. Some excellent physiotherapy got me out of severe pain but
my computing career became patchy for quite a few years while I tried to
figure out what to do. I was something of a World Wide Web pioneer in
the UK, writing and designing one of the first legal websites in
Britain, generating many of the pages statically from an MS Access
database. But every time I worked at a computing project I went slowly
downhill again into discomfort and pain.
In 1999 I had Alexander Technique lessons. After a few lessons I felt
both much better and genuinely excited: there seemed to be a clear
upward slope even when I went on with my computing. Recovery still took
many months, but I felt I'd found something that made a big, lasting
difference at last. That appears to have been Victorinox's experience
with the Alexander Technique too (http://bit.ly/JoY9uD, pdf) where using
the Alexander Technique coincided with a 42% decrease in absenteeism
among their 1000+ staff, many of whom were suffering from RSI.
Between 50% and 75% of computing professionals show some signs of MSDs
(musculo-skeletal disorders) http://www.deepaksharan.com/cri_intro.html.
Dr Deepak Sharan, a world authority on repetitive strain injuries, now
uses Alexander Technique as part of his Sharan Protocol for treating
Repetitive Strain Injuries. Using the AT and other mind-body work like
Feldenkrais and Yoga has improved his results from 60% up to 95% and
beyond. (Symposium on current research into RSIs in Canberra two weeks ago.)
We know from research in the British Medical Journal that 6 Alexander
Technique lessons eases chronic back pain by 48% and keeps it eased for

So the most obvious reasons why Alexander Technique (AT) lessons should
improve efficiency are time off sick with back pain, headaches and
repetitive strain injuries (see below for background .) But AT also
encourages a way of thinking and moving that is more open, more creative
and less exhausting. That's what got me excited in my first lessons and
made me want to train to be an Alexander teacher.
An average man takes 2 days off sick with back pain every year, an
average woman 2.6. One person in 10 has 36 days of back pain each year
(B F Walker et al., chargeable study called Low Back Pain in Australian
Adults: The Economic Burden.)
If a developer takes 4 days off sick in a year, then the chances are
high that 6 Alexander Technique lessons would cost less than the time
off work they save the business in the following year. The more time off
they take with back pain, the more the Alexander Technique saves. In
other words 6 lessons would save the developer's employer money as well
as helping the developer.

Hi,
Im using selenium with python bindings for an automation project.
In my pydev unit test module I have defined 10 functions.While running
this script I want to hide a particular function executing in the
playback window (say function no:5)
Though this function must execute it should not be shown in the users
screen while playback.
Its like when a user watching the playback window the monitor will be
displayed with the outputs in the order
1>2>3>4>6>7>8>9>10
But in the backend,obviously the procedure should be
1>2>3>4>5>6>7>8>9>10
Is it possible to automate a scenario like this? if yes,please reply
me with the solutions!

for our Gender Diversity Grants close on Friday this week. Google
Australia are funding several AU$500 grants for deserving women living
outside of the Souther Tasmania Region to attend PyCon Australia 2012,
which us happening in August in Hobart.

PyCon Australia and Google Australia are pleased to announce that
they're joining forces to offer gender diversity delegate grants to
women who wish to attend PyCon Australia in 2012. These grants will
cover up to $AUD500 of travel, accommodation and registration costs
for women living outside of the Southern Tasmania region to attend

These grants aim to reduce the financial barriers to attending PyCon
Australia 2012, by subsidising the registration and travel costs of

Thanks for the three suggestions from Anthony, Mark and Chai.
In the end I just used the python script to date correct the EXIF of the
two sets of photos back to GMT.. (the photos being taken in the UK meant
that GMT was the correct taken time)
Turns out that the application am using to edit and sort the photos (Canon
Digital Photo Professional) sorts the photo on the EXIF data and not the
file date, anyway!

"Getting started with Jython" looks interesting; I'd go out of my way
to attend such a talk even if I weren't planning to go to mpug
already. So my vote is for "yay".
Special topics I think are of interest:
- what is different/incompatible in jython vs cpython
- what is better in jython (why would I want to not use cython or pypy
to run my pythonlang project?)
- how to deploy/mix/meld python code within an existing java/jvm project.

command line arguments in Python, based on a couple of recent apps I
have written and also some of the work I've been doing preparing for one
of the tutorials at PyCon AU in August.
Consider it a showdown between the (at least) four different ways of
doing it via the standard library and some alternative ways via modules
in PyPI that will save you time and sanity.

Hi all,
Graeme has also kindly offered to run the meeting on Monday. I'm sure he'll do a stellar job of it.
I won't be there this time; I'm going on holiday tonight for a couple of weeks (woohoo!). Richard can't make it for Monday's meeting either, and Tennessee isn't yet sure if he can.
