Up to now, it has been assumed it will be run on Linux, but I have a bee in my bonnet that it should be multi-platform. So off I went and installed it on my Mac OS X 10.6 First problem, is that the python app imports vte, a virtual terminal emulator. I have spent the last hour googling and installing py27-gnome and py27-gnome-extras but they do not resolve problem. Is anyone able to point me down a better process of resolving this problem. Now, I don't actually want to rebuild the earth to get it working. The presumption in the design was that python and PyGTK would be a portable development environment and this appears to be correct. No problems with pygtk with Ubuntu, or Mac OS X 10.6. So, I guess what I am asking for guidance on is: 1: Am I missing something obvious in installing the gtk2 vte python module 2: This is likely to be a cumbersome and frustrating process best avoided. It is unlikely I can influence the decision to use pygtk, but if installing the python vte module on Mac and Windows is expected to be problematic, I can make a strong case for using a more easily installed alternative. Thanking you in advance for any assistance. regards Mike Rezny -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I would need to check some of our installations at work, but I think we are either: (a) running a 64-bit version of the pyserial library that we got from the "Unofficial Windows Binaries for Python Extension Packages" site at: http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/ (b) or, using a version that we built ourselves from source A quick google suggests an alternative which I've not tried: "IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are on a 64bit system you had to use the version 2.4 from pyserial and you need the additional Python Win32 Extensions pywin." http://code.google.com/p/measureit/wiki/Windows Regards Graeme -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Previously I have given a talk at LUV on my photo database application (spud) written in Python using Django. I found when initially writing code with Django I ended up constantly repeating myself, breaking the DRY (don't repeat yourself rule). Or I ended up putting significant amounts of presentation layer stuff in the db model class, ending up in a complete mess. So I ended up writing a generic library (or should I call it an Django App?) to try to clean up this mess up and keep everything separate in the appropriate places. I wanted to run this advert to the group and find out if anyone was interested? Or knew anyone who could be? I reckon it's a pretty sweet role... See below, Thanks! Melbourne start-up focusing on Multimedia online software and search engine technologies looking for a Software Architect. ? Inner north location ? Their products are going to blow your mind ? Up to $150K + super Alright, what we have here is not your usual company or your usual start-up (thinking they have come up with the best idea ever, when they are actually building an iPhone app to help you with the temperature of your cuppa). What we have is a solid company that has worked on a series of products for the last 4 years, have been financially backed by some highly respected investors, have built some online software, and are going to blow your socks off. Trust me, it?s gonna be big. With the release of the beta version of their main product scheduled in the next few weeks, the guys are super busy but still thinking forward, already planning on the next version and what needs to be improved, hence the need for a Software Architect to come on board and complement this talented team. So, what will you be doing? ? Liaise with the Lead Producer to deliver release and sprints goals ? Define, introduce and maintain best practice software, database and environment architecture throughout the business ? Ensure the development team adheres to coding standards and development processes ? Be the technical expert across all aspects of the product ? Proactively identify, mitigate, maintain and report on development issues to management You do have kick ass skills and experience in the following: ? JavaScript, Python and Ruby ? Leading a Team ? Requirements elicitation and prioritization ? Agile methodologies such as Scrum ? 5+ years of commercial web development experience ? Familiarity with Test Driven Development ? Building and maintaining software with distributed computing paradigms like Pub-Sub ? Common software patterns and uses, especially MVC ? An appreciation of common security issues in web development And you might have played with, or at least heard of and got excited by: ? ElasticSearch, RabbitMQ, Backbone.js, Celery, Selenium, Cassandra ? Both relational and NoSQL database technologies Based on what I?ve seen over the years, roles like this one don?t arise that often. The company that I?m representing will radically change the way we interact with the internet and how we search it. Yep, just that. So, if you think you have what it takes and want to be part of something big, well, you should polish up your CV and send it to enquiries at 10collective.com.au and quote reference M2504. If you think we should talk first, give me (Julien) a call at the office on 03 9935 9409. Very sorry to conflict with your talk Brian. We didn't get much notice of Brett Smith's visit. I'd certainly be interested in seeing your Django talk if you could re-schedule. No problem, I don't blame you in anyway; I certainly understand how these things work. Considering the possibility that the speaker will be attending Brett's talk, I think it is wise that I postpone my talk until next month. -- Brian May From tleeuwenburg at gmail.com Tue Feb 28 02:47:59 2012 From: tleeuwenburg at gmail.com (Tennessee Leeuwenburg) Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2012 12:47:59 +1100 Subject: [melbourne-pug] Announcement: Next Meeting is Monday, 5th March Message-ID: Hi all, I have just returned from holidays in the Grampians, where it was sunny, hot and a total escape. So I'm afraid I may be a bit late in sending out this notice. Don't let that curb your enthusiasm! The next meeting is next week on Monday, starting at 6pm. Full details on the location and how to get there can be found at http://j.mp/mpug. For our presentations, I will be giving "Using Python an AI to win at rock, paper, scissors" a trial run in the 15-minute slot. It will include a discussion of the game, show a few simple AI algorithms for calculating probabilities and predicting moves, and, wi-fi permitting, an online demo in which I will get my butt kicked by my own code. There are still vacancies in the 5 minute and 15 minute categories. It would be great to get at least one more talk up there. However, if not, we can just chillax and enjoy the rockin vibe of the Inspire9 co-working space, maybe play a game of pool, and generally talk Python. It's a great venue and I encourage you to come and enjoy the evening. Cheers, -T -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
