As you (the OP) found, 2.1.x installs and works very well. I think one thing worth adding is that in the Unix world, most of the public software such as Mailman tends to follow traditional versioning. Unlike the PC world where it seems somewhat common to call something a beta yet tell the users that it's ready to go (and then stay in "perpetual beta"), a beta here means that it's still being debugged. Until a "release candidate" version is put up, I would not use Mailman 3 unless I want to be a tester. For the 2.1.x tree, I believe recent release candidates have gone to the production version without change other than finishing the documentation.

In short, don't be fooled by the PC world and perpetual betas. Mark will let us know when Mailman 3 is ready to use in a production environment.
