[Mailman-Users] mailman not receiving/sending mails

Hi,
I have installed mailman locally on my system(as per the installation guide)
.I am facing some technical difficulties,have been trying to find the
solution for quite some time now but have been unsuccessful.

1) The gui is working perfectly(http://localhost/mailman/admin).
2) I am able to create new lists,change the settings through the user
interface in general options and all that comes in list administrative site.
3)but when I try to add subscribers via mass subscription option(by adding
email-id in the box) they dont recive subscription mails....
4)Similarly if I happen to subscribe to a list as an outsider I do not get
any kind of subscription notification or confirmation on my email account,at
the same time nothing appears in the administrative user interface
indicating the new subscription.

I think my mailman can not recieve or send mails .I have performed
everything given in the installation guide but still facing such problems.
Can anyone  tell me what is going wrong in my case?
