I can't believe I missed that in the FAQ! I've gone through that FAQ  
a bunch for other issues (mostly moving lists), I feel embarrassed now.

I removed the two masquerading entries from sendmail.mc, changed the  
CNAME to an A-record and now everything is peachy.
