No.

You shouldn't have to. The default accepted groups are 'www',
'www-data' and 'nobody'.

You probably need

RedirectMatch ^/mailman[/]*$ http://www.thorie.com/mailman/listinfo

in your Apache config.

Can you go to http://www.thorie.com/mailman/listinfo,
http://www.thorie.com/mailman/admin, etc. If so, the above
RedirectMatch should fix things.
