I received a few private messages about this, so I'll summarize the simple answer here. I moved ~mailman/cgi-bin to ~mailman/anothername, changed all references to this in the httpd.conf and also added a ScriptAlias for that path as for the former /mailman/->~mailman/cgi-bin directive. Seems to work fine.
