Normally you'd just use ~mailman/bin/rmlist <listname>.  This will leave the
archives in place.  I'm not entirely sure what happens if the archives were
private how this works, since once the list is gone there's no membership
list to check for access to the archives.  If that's what you're trying to
do, I would think that removing the list aliases from your MTA would suffice
to prevent further posts.
