Time to see _exactly_ what's happening...  Could you
use 'script' to document the steps (and all output) you're
taking from tarball, right up to where you do an 'ls -l' and
don't see a 'wrapper'?  Ie, the untarring, the build, and
everything.  Something isn't quite logical here.
