My guess is that he has some sort of spam filter setup.

In the web admin on the General Options page, try removing the
Linux-admin at list.whatever.com from the Admin list and instead put the email
addresses of each of the individuals (one per line).  That should work just
fine, and then Mailman will be mailing the users directly - so you might
actually make it past his spam filter.
