Apparently, it's OK to edit the "mbox" file containing the raw archive,
and regenerate the archive.  Eg.
  cd ~mailman
  cat < /dev/null > archives/private/test.mbox/test.mbox
  ./bin/(whatever-the-incantation-to-regenerate-the-archive-is)
