I was having this same problem. I was able to get i working by creating 
an aliases file in the /home/mailman directory,
then  add the following to main.cf:

alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases, hash:/home/mailman/aliases

Then cd to /home/mailman
su to mailman or whatever you run mailman under,
then run %postalias ./aliases

There seem to be a lot of weird things to work out as far as file 
ownership and permissions go with Mailman.
