one is kept by the linux kernel, one is hardware. I'm asusming linux 
did this so it wouldn't have to assume it had a hardware clock -- 
it's a linuxism, no other unix I know of does it this way.

dos? I have no clue. I'm a unix/mac guy. sorry.
