What happens when, from a shell prompt on that box, you do the
following:

  $ telnet localhost smtp

Do you get a welcome message from your MTA?  If you don't that's why
MailMan is complaining.  Debug that and you should be back to
battery.

This will happen automatically as part of the normal cron job.
