How about just not sending the welcome message?

Otherwise, yes, of course you can edit the welcome; first, there's
the stuff you can edit from the admin page; then there's the stuff
in templates/subscribeack.txt.

I just posted a patch to sourceforge that allows per-list overrriding
of the templates/subscribeack.txt, too; perhaps Barry will consider
that for a future release.
