Never seen this. Runs fine on NS 4.61 on Solaris and Windows.

You can go to the Members Mangement area and uncheck the "Subscr"
box. That will unsubscribe them via a checkbox, just like you asked.

There is a command line utility that will do this. Your ISP should be
able to add them (see add_members) for you. There is also a box on the 
Members Management page that allows you to enter in a list of people.

While I agree that an email interface would be nice, I have to admit
that the amount of time that I spend administering lists is very
small. If the software works (which Mailman does), then I don't need
to spend much time administering it. That's a plus in my book. 

Not sure why the Membership pages freeze up on you but that appears to 
be the crux of your problems. Most of what you are looking for are on
those pages. I'd say it's a browser problem though as it works for me
(and presumably most other people) with various browsers (although it
looks funky in Lynx due to it's table handling :)
