[Mailman-Users] Reinstalling mailman

We just upgraded from an old Debian Linux to RH 6.0x. The
mailman user exists.

I ran configure and I get:

checking whether #! works in shell scripts... (cached) yes
checking for mailman UID... File "conftest.py", line 1
    import pwd, string
    ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
cat: conftest.out: No such file or directory

configure: error:
***** No "mailman" user found!
***** Your system must have a "mailman" user defined (usually
***** in your /etc/passwd file). Please see the INSTALL file
***** file details.

What does that signify?

Thanks,
Pete
