Well the problem has since vanished. : P
At this point /proc/sys/fs/file-nr is showing ~1800 allocated and ~1300
inuse file handles. The machine has not been rebooted since the time I was
getting those error's, so ~1800 was the highest amount of handles ever reached.
(far short of the default 4096)
