I see, after reading the One True Doc (the code), that such is
already possible just by editing templates/subscribeack.txt.
I've moved our welcome to the bottom, and added huge screaming
text at the top saying

SAVE THIS MESSAGE!!!  YOU WILL NEED IT TO UNSUBSCRIBE!!!!

IT CONTAINS INSTRUCTIONS AND A PASSWORD THAT YOU WILL NEED TO 
UNSUBSCRIBE!!!

REALLY!  SAVE THIS MESSAGE!
