Mailman 2.0 does not support i18n, and its archiving of MIME messages has severe limitations which cannot be fixed in a reasonable way (i.e. without incorporating much of the Mailman 2.1 machinery, and breaking Python 1.5 support) Regards, Martin From sawickib at iem.pw.edu.pl Thu Apr 3 14:47:30 2003 From: sawickib at iem.pw.edu.pl (Bartosz Sawicki) Date: Thu Apr 3 07:47:39 2003 Subject: [Mailman-i18n] @hi, about starting translate mailman to Ukraine In-Reply-To: <49202.192.168.21.74.1049333970.inet@webmail.ichistory.org> References: <49202.192.168.21.74.1049333970.inet@webmail.ichistory.org> Message-ID: <20030403124730.GA88743@volt.iem.pw.edu.pl> > I need translate mailman to Ukraine. > What need for this? Translating the date is much harder because that's a variable piece of information, and gettext doesn't really handle such things at all. Release_2_1-maint is a branch tag which labels the point at which the maintenance release source code branched off from the trunk of development (which will someday form the basis of Mailman 2.2 or 3.0). Release_2_1_2 tags specific revisions of files, generally the head of the Release_2_1-maint branch. As soon as 2.1.2 is released, Release_2_1_2 will mark the point in the past from which the 2.1.2 release was made, but Release_2_1-maint branch will continue. Sooo... :) The best thing to do is, make two different checkouts, one for the mainline code, and the second for the Release_2_1-maint branch. The second checkout would do "cvs co -rRelease_2_1-maint". Then you'd make your fixes to both the maintenance branch and the trunk. I just picked up Simone's patch on the maint branch for the Italian translation. I'm willing to hold up the 2.1.2 release for Daniel to make the Norwegian updates. Both of you: be sure to also apply your changes to the trunk! If there are any other i18ners who want to make last minute updates, please let me know. I will probably do the release sometime tonight, in all likelihood, around 11pm EDT. -Barry From pioppo at ferrara.linux.it Mon Apr 21 16:04:57 2003 From: pioppo at ferrara.linux.it (Simone Piunno) Date: Mon Apr 21 09:06:45 2003 Subject: [Mailman-i18n] Translation update In-Reply-To: <1050928352.3626.6.camel@anthem> References: <1050924647.23564.12.camel@fornax.hjemme.bibsys.no> <1050928352.3626.6.camel@anthem> Message-ID: <20030421130457.GA29187@ferrara.linux.it> On Mon, Apr 21, 2003 at 08:32:32AM -0400, Barry A. We have a pure-Python version of msgfmt - It cuts out about 4MB uncompressed from the tar file - Having .mos makes creating patches more difficult. - It should greatly speed up cvs update. I'd like to know if anybody has objections to this. It would actually make the translation teams job easier since you won't have to worry about building or checking in the .mo files. I have this working in an unchecked in snapshot. Before I commit it I wanted to see if anybody has major objections or can see any flaws. -Barry From jordi at sindominio.net Mon Apr 21 21:24:24 2003 From: jordi at sindominio.net (Jordi Mallach) Date: Mon Apr 21 14:24:59 2003 Subject: [Mailman-i18n] Removing .mo files from cvs In-Reply-To: <1050949045.30943.39.camel@barry> References: <1050949045.30943.39.camel@barry> Message-ID: <20030421182424.GA15146@nubol.int.oskuro.net> On Mon, Apr 21, 2003 at 02:17:26PM -0400, Barry Warsaw wrote: > I'm strongly considering removing .mo files from cvs and the tar.gz > file, possibly for Mailman 2.1.2. We have a pure-Python version of msgfmt Is this msgfmt.py distributed in the tarball? If yes, I guess it's ok. If no, I'd leave them in. If they are removed, they should probably be built by the normal "make all" rule without needing external tools (automake-made tarballs are like this). They would definitely be built with "make all". On what level do you want support? mailman2.1 does not support Hebrew out of the box, i.e. the mailman web pages and other messages have not been translated to Hebrew. The reason for this lack of translation is that no volunteer stepped forward to provide a translation. It is, however, possible to add support for Hebrew, by translating all the web pages. In the templates you translate, you can add proper markup for bidirectionality where appropriate. Regards, Martin From tomfa at debian.org Mon Apr 28 09:23:45 2003 From: tomfa at debian.org (Tomas Fasth) Date: Tue May 13 10:27:19 2003 Subject: [Mailman-i18n] Request to become champion for Swedish translation of Mailman Message-ID: <3EACE50A.3070106@debian.org> Hello Barry, My name is Tomas Fasth, I'm a (fairly new) Debian package maintainer, and I noted that the translation of Mailman texts to Swedish was lacking a champion. I'm interested in bringing the swedish translation of Mailman up to date. I have been in contact with Daniel Buchmann who directed me to you (and the mailman-i18n list). I registered an account at sourceforge as follows: User ID: 766597 Login Name (User Name): tomfa You can, if you find it appropriate, use that account to give me write access to the mailman cvs tree, or at least the swedish specific files. I have been monitoring the development of Mailman since more or less the beginning and even reported a few bugs a long time ago in the 1.x tree. I use Mailman frequently in my professional work, and that's where I have identified the need for a reliable swedish translation. I'm native swedish, so why not contribute with my natural gift? :) Best Regards, Tomas Fasth
