It does if you pass it the right options.

Rather than having mailman do the VERPing, I let postfix handle
it.  Performance is greatly improved, because at the least you
can then have multiple recipients per queue file.

There's several things mailman should be letting the MTA handle,
as long as it can.  VERP and requesting no warning messages, for
example.
