Content filters are not necessarily evil. 
It's bouncing to the From header that's evil.

If it makes you feel better consider the case of somebody who has their MTA
configured to refuse messages over a certain size, like all old installations
of sendmail for example.

So if for a few days only large kernel patches are send to the mailing list
and mailman sees every message to that user bounce. It doesn't mean the
address is any worse off than usual, it's just those messages that were
refused.
