Try cutting Mailman out of the loop, and just write a little script to
use smtplib on the same machine to send a canned message to yourself.
If you get the same exception, then try going one level down and
telnetting to the smtp port directly, typicing the SMTP dialogs by
hand.

I suspect it's a problem with your sendmail configuration.
