[IPython-dev] Checkpoints & empty directories

While running the Jupyter notebook, I periodically see messages that the
notebook is autosaved.

Today, I opened Windows Explorer in the directory where all of my notebooks
are stored. I was surprised to see 30+ directories named with the last
notebook I had created, along with a unique
sequence number appended to "ipnb"

I was under the impression that each of these directories contained
snapshots of my notebook at various stages of its evolution, however all of
the directories are empty.

What is the purpose of creating all of the empty directories?
Is there a configuration setting to change this?

While this isn't a problem, it's just a nuisance, the code and notes I had
entered into that notebook
is nowhere to be found.

Thanks

Tony
