Duh, I should have said (since he does indicate that a readline
install fixes things): should we explicitly *require* readline on OSX?
 I know we have code that checks for libedit, but I don't know if
libedit is actually usable at all.  So should our default stance be to
require libedit being present on OSX unconditionally?
