Alan,

Since you are using Windows you can download an executable that will
automatically set up PIL in Python for you.

The exe is located at:
http://www.pythonware.com/downloads/py21-pil-1.1.2-20010910.exe

Or if you want the unofficial latest version (1.1.3) executable download you can
get it at:
http://www.effbot.org/downloads/PIL-1.1.3.win32-py2.1.exe
