Yes, i thought this was a good idea too.  I think using
Python with turtle graphics could be a great way for
someone to learn about programming.

I fiddled with a similar turtle-graphics module a while
ago, except it would draw on a Tk canvas (using a similar
mechanism to 'pywish' to achieve interactive response to
commands).

Don't know where it's gotten to.  Might have died with my
last hard drive crash.  Wasn't very hard, though.
