[PYTHON IMAGE-SIG] GIF animation?

Has anyone used Python to produce GIF animations yet?  I specifically need 
a tool that can be used in a batch environment (ie, not win95 based).

If not, does anyone have any pointers to the correct method of producing 
GIF animations using inter-frame compression?

ps. if anyone knows of a non-python UNIX tool that I could use that _uses 
compression between frames_ then I'd greatly appreciate it (send email to 
me though - it is off-topic).
