I'm not sure I understand your problem.  eXpat compiles with gcc
without any challenges on any recent version of Linux.

Extract the .tar.gz file, run the the configure script and then type
make... done in about a minute...  I actually did this earlier today
on Fedora 9 using expat 2.0.1 ...
