Initial Comment:
The presence of the check library (and check.h) should
be checked by 'configure', and if it's not there then
'make check' should print a warning. Otherwise you get
some rather alarming errors seeming to come from the
test suite :-(.

Bumped priority since this bites a lot of users; the noise
level when the check library is not installed is high enough
to lead someone to think that something is seriously wrong.
