This is a very good point.  I should add to my list after piquing a  
student's interested, you need to keep them interested.  And that is  
accomplished if the student reaches many little milestones  
successfully.  When a student has trouble, struggles to overcome it,  
and succeeds--that is a huge motivator, not to mention an excellent  
lesson in it's own right about the importance of determination.
