This is fantastic news!

Am a data scientist, work heavily with Python. I'd love if there could be a
track on pydata as well, and would be willing to speak. Can ask a few other
people in the data science community if interested in case.
I'd expect the call for proposal/website will be out as soon as possible
for applications, but wanted to communicate my interest early on already,
so looking forward to hear more!

Hi all,

You've probably seen the email Dougal posted to the list, but if you're not
familiar with EuroPython, the significance may have been lost.

EuroPython is (I think) the largest Python conference outside of the US -
it currently boasts 1200+ attendees each year. Many really significant
Python developers attend, including Guido van Rossum many years. It moves
around Europe; In the past 5 years, it has been hosted in Rimini, Bilbao,
Berlin, and Florence - we're in good company!

The main body of the conference consists of 3 days of talks, with 5
different talks going on simultaneously, so there's plenty to choose from!
There are also workshops, and sprints, where you get to work alongside
amazing people to help make Python software better. It is a wonderful,
supportive environment, and they encourage new speakers - EuroPython was
where I gave my first Python talk outside of Edinburgh, and I've since
given talks there several times.

You should consider submitting a talk, no matter what level of Python
experience you have - a common problem they have is that not enough
beginner-level talks are submitted. But you have time to think about it -
the Call For Proposals has not yet been announced. I'll mail the list when
it is announced, or follow the EuroPython blog or Twitter account.

But, MOST IMPORTANTLY: VOLUNTEER! EuroPython is a community conference, and
is run by volunteers, not for profit. It is a safe space, and has a
detailed and enforced code of conduct. They specifically need local
volunteers. You can submit your details on the form here:
http://www.europython-society.org/workgroups - select the "Other"
workgroup, and enter "On Site" - and you can select multiple workgroups if
you wish. The more people volunteer, the less work is actually involved for
each volunteer, and the smoother things will run. (Incidentally, I am *not*
running this conference - just a volunteer)

I'm super-excited about this, and I hope you are too. For many, I suspect
it will be your first opportunity to attend. You'll learn new things and
make new friends - and you get to show off your country to the World!

Funnily enough, I?m just back from Budapest where where there was a PyData track I was talking at.

For people who don?t know, PyData is a series of city-based organizations around the world, funded by NumFOCUS, which also funds numpy, Scipy, Jupyter and lots of other things. As the name suggests, PyData is all about the intersection between Python and Data Science, though it?s extremely open and inclusive and often goes well beyond Python. Generally, each city organization holds a monthly meet-up with a couple of talks and maybe some lightning talks, and when they get established they usually run an annual conference too, often over a weekend.

There?s a lot of international interest and support (from the rest of the community, including?Ian Osvald, who runs PyData London, Vincent Warderman who runs PyData Amsterdam, and Alexander Hendorf, who chairs EuroPython) in a PyData Edinburgh being set up, and I promised after talking to a lot of folks at various PyDatas that I would think seriously trying to get PyData Edinburgh established. 

If anyone is interested (particularly in helping out organizing) do let me know. I think an obvious thing would be to aim to start a monthly meetup in (say) January and try to get a 1-day PyData track at Europython in the summer.

thanks very much. I don't know how the organisation typically works for
tracks but if it's as simple as proposing talks at application stage and
grouping by topics think we'd have a decent amount, I'd up for one in any

This sounds great, but if the prices are the same as last year (up to 
200?/day), I can't afford to attend.

Does anyone know of ways to get discounts ? (registering early, giving a 
talk, volunteering maybe ?)

The few people that handle this are very busy sorting out the contract
with the venue. So there will be a delay in them responding to this
form.

If you want to discuss different tracks and ideas you can also ping me
directly (on this email). I am in the EuroPython program workgroup (we
basically deal with all the CFP and all the content and schedule
etc.). This will be my third year helping (in a fairly small capacity
tbh). Some of this work is already under way or just starting up.

If it's the same as previous years, there's a discount for giving a talk,
and significant volunteering, and if you give a workshop it's free!

There is also a fund to allow those who couldn't otherwise afford it to
attend, although that's mostly focused on diversity initiatives.

Europe, we are pleased to announce our selection of the location and
venue for EuroPython 2018:

  Edinburgh, UK

  Edinburgh International Conference Center (EICC)

* Dates:
  July 23 - 29 2018

Fringe, so you can extend your stay a little longer if you like:

Based on the feedback we collected in the last few years, we have
switched to a more compact conference layout for 2018:

* Monday, Tuesday:
  Workshops and Trainings

* Wednesday, Thursday, Friday:

More information will be available as we progress with the

PS: We are now entering contract negotiations, so the above dates are
