Subject: [Python Edinburgh] job posting for a senior dev @ Ecometrica
Message-ID: <4EB8825F.1040307@ecometrica.ca>
Hi!
I've never posted here, being based in Montr?al and active in the local
python community here, so please pardon the intrusion. But i actually
work in the Montr?al office of a company that's based in Edinburgh, and
we're looking for at least 1 developer. I'm pasting the job description
below.
I'll be in Edinburgh *next week* (week of the 14th), so if anybody's
interested, please do send me your cv and links and any other info asap,
so that perhaps we can meet each other while i'm over there! As the
description says, we're preferably looking in Montr?al, because the dev
team is all here, *but* if i find someone better in Edinburgh, i can
make it an Edinburgh-based position, provided you're willing to come
spend 1-2 months in Montr?al when you start, and come over every now and
then for 1-2 weeks. It's an awesome city, you'll love it i'm sure! Not
as pretty as Edinburgh, but it has many other advantages!
Ecometrica is a
company of specialists and experts ingreenhouse gas (GHG) accounting
,ecosystem
services ,
climate change policy, remote sensing and web based programming. We have
unrivalled experience in the development and application of the major
standards for greenhouse gas accounting and ecosystem change measurement.
Our mission is to make accounting for GHG emissions and ecosystem
changes accessible to all organisations, including business and
government, through web-based services that distill our knowledge and
experience.
To get a feel for the kind of technical work we do, you can watch my
presentation at Montr?al-Python 24
.
We are presently on the lookout for a senior developer position, based
preferably in Montr?al (Canada), but potentially in Edinburgh (Scotland)
if the right candidate is located there. This is an immediate opening.
Ideally, you are very-well versed in at least some of:
* Python (e.g., you know how metaclasses work, or how a large list
will allocate memory upon the next append)
* Backend Django development (e.g., you know querysets inside out -
how and when they query the database, how their internals caches work)
* Linux Infrastructure (deployment, security, etc.)
* Cloud environments (we?re on AWS)
* Frontend development (you can do magic with javascript, HTML and CSS)
* Testing, both frontend (using e.g. windmill) and backend (python
unittests)
* Frontend design (usability, visual design)
We?re not expecting you to be an expert in all of this, but if you have
a few of those points and are very smart, please apply!!!
You *must*:
* have a good sense of humor
* work well in geographically disconnected teams
* have good communications skills in english
* deal well with receiving a vague problem description, and take
matters in your own hands to make sure it gets solved to everybody?s
satisfaction with limited resources
The challenges are numerous and great, in all areas - infrastructure,
backend, algorithms, database scaling (we have billions of rows in our
ecosystem databases), frontend design and implementation, etc. We really
need you!
In terms of perks, Ecometrica is a great place to work at. Schedules are
completely flexible - i want you to get things done, and if you?re not
feeling it one morning, go for a bike ride and work later! If you?ve got
deadlines one week and really crunch it, go skying for a couple of days
the next week! How you work and solve problems is also flexible, and
you?ll get a mac or linux laptop, your choice (i?m assuming you won?t be
choosing windows).
We provide a nice open office, unlimited coffee, tea and snacks,
once-a-week team breakfast or lunch, and we?ll often open a beer or two
on friday afternoon while finishing the week?s work. You?ll get to visit
the other office from time to time. Good options package. And of course
full health coverage. It?s like working for a startup, but a startup
which is already in the black and has lots of paying clients, so much
less stress - we?re here for the long run but you get to join while the
company is still relatively small (less than 10 in Montr?al, 25 total).
Salary and vacations will depend on your experience, but will be
competitive.
The team is great, too. You won?t be simply working in a dev team,
you?ll also be working with amazing, fun, very bright scientists both in
Montr?al and in Edinburgh. The 3 co-founders are all scientists, there
are simply no PHB around to ruin your day!
You can send your CV to jobs at ecometrica.ca. But even better, send us
links to sites you?ve built, projects you?ve completed, repos on github
or bitbucket where you?ve contributed or are the lead developer, your
twitter stream, or anything else that makes sense.

Subject: [Python Edinburgh] Coffee Shop Hack
Message-ID: <0E230A9F37C347F38319719910061368@gmail.com>
Hey all,
I mentioned a few weeks ago[1] that I would be up in Edinburgh for
the weekend. I plan to do some general hacking on code in a coffee
shop and welcome anybody to come along and join in.
I'll be in Loudons Cafe[2] on Fountainbridge. They have a good
selection drinks and free WiFi. The food also looks good but I've
never had any.
I will be there by 10 am on Saturday at the latest, probably closer to
9am and will be likely to hang about most of the day. I'm not sure
about Sunday - but probably a similar deal.
Saturday night will no doubt involve some food and beers if there are
any takers (silly question right Mark?).
Anyway, it would be good to see anybody there that can make it. As
usual, you can contact me on my phone: 07719 780 595 to check I'm
there or to join us later on in the day.
If your planning to come along, it would be handy if you could give me
a quick heads up.
Cheers,
Dougal

Oops. I just realised, I didn't make it clear that I'm talking about this

Hey Dougal,
Sorry for the late reply. I'm definitely planning to come to this. I
probably won't be there until nearer 11-12, though! I'm also up for
some drinks in the evening.
Anybody else coming along?

I think there's about five who've said they'll be coming along (I'll be
there at least).

Message-ID:
The Python pub meetup is tonight - I suspect it will be the last one of the
year! The same deal as usual: Bert's Bar from 6:30, with a possible move to
Teuchters around 7:30. There will be a python logo on the end of the table
to help any newcomers find us.
Hope to see you there!

I forgot the python logo, so I sketched something appropriate. We are at
